Last night during New York’s massive Fashion’s Night Out, Opening Ceremony hosted a “Chinatown style” block party featuring Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, Scott Sternberg from Band of Outsiders, and Alexander Wang.
Outside on the street each designer had his or her own street cart, making it the only time you could safely buy Alexander Wang out of the back of a black van in Chinatown. This gimmick was done similarly last year by Louis Vuitton outside the Brooklyn Museum, but it’s hard to beat having Sternberg hand you a cookie with your tie from an old Thai truck, especially when the cookies were provided by Momofuku Milk Bar.
Inside, the store was a full blown party, with the guys from Vampire Weekend taking turns at the dj booth while live dancers entertained the crowds from the display window.
The crowd, both guys and girls dressed in double breasted blazers and pocket squares jumping around to “Killing in the Name of”, was extremely entertaining to see.
Lots of free beer, balloons, ice cream, and people dancing wildly amongst the racks of designer clothing without regard for possible drink spillage made this probably the best event of the evening. I think.
7 beers later I realized I wasn’t going to make it to any other events. 4 beers earlier I had stopped caring.
